I always coated those exposed threads with something like tar or undercoating to try to extend the life of the pipe. Galvanized pipes last a long time, but always rust through where the threads are cut and there is no galvanizing. The good hydrants have been mentioned, and I love the idea of a stainless pipe. First one was installed in 1953 when we bought this farm and was replaced in 1975 when Dad had a new well dug and the hydrant was moved out of a well pit. I vote for Woodford/Iowa also, they must be best, Tractor Supply company doesn't sell them. I see a lot of Iowa hydrants around the area too. We did have one I an area where the soil was awfully tight and we did have to run a short tile line away from the area to get drainage. Adjustment is the big thing as well as about 2 feet of clean rock under the valve. We have older Merrill hydrants and they have been quite reliable. Posted 19:21 (#3801014 - in reply to #3800923) Subject: RE: I need a GOOD frost proof hydrant IOWA hydrants have been around since I was a kid (60+ years ), still working and always been good. Make sure to adjust the shout off rod so it fully shuts off the water and drains it back down. Waterspman - 18:43 I've worked on and installed hydrants for years, IMO the only one worth spending money one is the woodford (Iowa ) usually install the 6 or 7 foot bury, in some poultry barns if they were real concerned with corrosion we'd take them apart and replace the galvanized pipe with stainless, on the bottom around the drain I put a piece of tile or plastic jug around it just to create a lil cavity to help drain, very longlasting trouble free hydrants, the cheep junk isn't worth the time in takes to put them in look's to be well built, much above standard hydrants
